Opening to Spirit: Contacting the Healing Power of the Chakras and Honouring African Spirituality
What are they? Do they really exist? What do they mean for us? Is it just a load of baloney? How do they benefit us? In this article I will attempt to shed light on all of these questions — so stay tuned!
Many consider them to be a theory with no real backbone. Some believe they are the source of our wellbeing. And others even believe they are the key to enable our spiritual connection to the Universe. They predominantly deal with energy flow in the body and are said to be focussed areas or vortices of high, expansive energy, within multiple locations in the body.
There are thought to be Chakras within the body in total, but 7 main Chakras spanning from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, and are considered to follow the curvature of the spine. These Nadis are considered to be the vessels through which energy flows, from the chakras to the rest of the body. In religion and spirituality, the movement of energy is the central, and fundamental, core around which many traditions are based.
Ancient practices such as Reiki, QiGong and Tai Chi focus on the manipulation of energy to achieve well being. We like to think of space as empty and matter as solid. It is mostly unsubstantial. Everything connects via magnetic energy and is electrical energy. See the article on the impact of electromagnetic energy HERE. All matter is held together via energetic bonds and consist of these atoms, of which most, is space.
The movement of energy is vital to life. When we think, breathe, function or even when we are resting, electrical energy is flowing through our bodies via our neurones and nerve pathways. Remember: A lot of these ancient traditions came from primitive understandings of biology and therefore a degree of flexibility is necessary when trying to understand the significance of their teachings!
This system is what correlates with the chakras. For example — digestion; our heart rate, sneezing, swallowing and breathing. It is the Parasympathetic Nervous System part of the automatic nerve response system which has the greatest relevance to the areas where the Chakras are thought to be located.
Where the major networks of nerves are, they correspond with the glands in our bodies — So I guess the question to ask is — why do glands require so much electrical input?
The diagram below shows the position of the various Chakras. Notice how they correlate to the above diagram:. Glands secrete hormones into the bloodstream and are HUGELY important in the functioning of our bodies, more so than what a lot of people realise!
In fact, the gradual decrease in hormone production over time, is what leads to the aging process! Other hormones, such as DMT Dimethyltryptaminesecreted by the pineal gland in the brain, is known to cause Out of Body Experience, heightened creativity and even psychic abilities! Therefore stimulation of the Vagus nerve may lead to some very positive health benefits, especially in a society which is suffering from the effects of subconscious fear fear of stability, the status of our jobs, terrorist attacks, money, and so on and so forth!
The Kundalini is the ancient description for the energy or shakti present within our bodies. It is said that the kundalini stems from the base of the spine and winds its way up to the top of the head, and is often compared to a snake or a serpent.Print copies of the Songbook. But did you know that some chakra systems count 12 or more chakras?
Familiarity with the 12 chakra system adds depth, context, and appreciation for your understanding of how chakras work and how to best balance energies in your life. As much as one may appreciate simplicity in learning about the chakras, there is no unique or unified understanding of the chakra system to this day. The knowledge about the 12 chakras mostly comes from modern perspectives expressed by contemporary healers and energy workers.
Put simply, there are 2 main types of configurations presented in modern healing schools of thoughts: The 12 chakras are located either both inside and outside of the body or all inside :. The premise of the 12 chakra system is that all living beings are part of a whole. Each of us is grounded to the earth and linked to the universe via a thin cable. That cable stretches from roughly three feet below your feet to miles and miles up through the atmosphere and on deep into outer space.
Using 12 chakras allows us to draw from powerful energies outside of the human body and get in touch with the whole array of dimensions of our human experience. In many ancient traditions, earth and sky energies are believed to mix within the human body. The twelve-chakra system is a vivid representation of this belief.
Similar to the format of standard spiritual chakra charts, each one of the five additional chakra possesses their own location, color, and function.
The traditional chakra colors follow the spectrum of the rainbow, while the extended system may add colors associated with metals or other elements. The 8th and 9th chakras are generally represented above the head, and the 10th chakra slightly under the ground.
However, we can find descriptions of the twelve chakra system locating the 8th chakra underground and the remaining higher energy centers above the crown.
The 12 Chakras
To sum it up, the number of additional chakras is the same, but the order in which they are presented is slightly different. Below is a presentation of the two main series of 12 chakras with a slight variation where the 8th chakra is interchanged with the 10th chakra between the first and second system. The position of chakra 8 et 9 above the crown chakra is a fairly common representation of the higher chakras. Lizzy is editor in chief of Chakra Magazine and chakras.

I believe every person without exception starts life free of evil but catches it like a disease from others along our paths that are infected. If we can cure ourselves then we are worthy of a continued existence on this beautiful yet massively unappreciated planet. I believe the key is in understanding that blame is an illusion and that when you go deep you can see how even the nastiest people have got to where they are, granted with enough background info.
The disease was passed from the last race that we know as the Greek gods.Photo: mbg Creative. We'll also summarize the defining characteristics of each chakra, from root to crown. When it's blocked, we feel threatened, as if we're standing on unstable ground. Those with a blocked sacral chakra could feel a lack of control in their lives. If your solar plexus chakra is blocked, you might feel overwhelming amounts of shame and self-doubt. Those with open sacral chakras are free to express their true selves.
Someone with a blocked heart chakra will have difficulty fully opening up to the people in their life. If someone's heart is open, they can experience deep compassion and empathy. Someone with a blocked throat chakra will feel like they have trouble finding the words to say how they truly feel. As we move up the body, we're getting closer to communion with the divine.
The third-eye chakra controls our ability to see the big picture and connect to intuition. Visions and intuitive hits are not uncommon for someone with an open third-eye chakra.

Invaluable to my understanding of how spirituality is directly linked to your physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being!!!When the flow of the energies in the nadis and the purification and distribution processes in the chakras are perfect, we realize our divine true Self. If there is any blockage or disturbance in the nadis or in the chakras, we are disturbed and go away from our true divine Self.
Purpose of Om meditation or Vipassana meditation is to keep these nadis and chakras pure and clean so that we always remain connected with our divine self — the source of divine creative energy and pure energy of happiness. A lack of energy flow in the chakras can affect the physical, mental, psychological, emotional and spiritual health of an individual. Om has seven levels of vibrations and each vibration has its purification effect on the chakras and on the nadis and optimizes the energy flow.
Many spiritual seekers and researchers asked me about the exact science and presence of chakras and nadis in human body. To realize the nadis and chakras, you need deep awareness meditation.
To understand the science of nadis in depth you need a basic understanding of quantum physics, and the human nervous system. Nadis and chakras are deeply related with the four forms of life energies — physical energy, mental energy, emotional energy and the spiritual energy. For a perfect life we need balance of these four energies. Through meditation you can purify the nadis and the chakras. However, nadis and chakras are most prominent.
There are 7 major chakras, 21 minor chakras and 86 micro chakras in human body. Among the chakras, chakras reside within the body and the other 2 are outside the body. Among the major seven chakras, one is present outside the body, over the head region.
There are 21 minor chakras distributed all over the body. All the chakras are not active all the times. Some are prominent and some are dormant. Unlike machines, life energy moves rhythmically up and down.
The energy flow in the nadis are linked to the sleep cycle, the circadian rhythm and ultradian rhythm of the body. Normally, ultradian rhythm is about minute cycles.
These nadis are densely connected with navel area, heart area and the brain area of the body. Each chakra is described as a bud of flower. The number of petals corresponds to the number of subtle energy connections coming and going from each chakra.
When they are synced together they clear out stagnant energy from the body and the mind. Each petal has one letter of the Sanskrit alphabet upon it. All fifty letters of the Sanskrit alphabet are represented upon the petals of the chakra flowers.
There are total of 52 letters 16 vowels and 36 consonants in Sanskrit language. Crown chakra has one thousand petals. The other chakras have total 50 petals. Brow chakra has two petals. Throat chakra has 16 petals. Heart chakra contains 12 petals.7 Chakras - Our Doorway To Knowledge - Sadhguru
